Deionization – Ion Exchange – Softening and Dealkalization
SAMCO Technologies, Inc. & Rohm and Haas introduce the
Advanced Amberpack™ system for industrial water treatment.
Advanced Amberpack™ is a revolutionary pre-engineered ion
exchange system, designed specifically for those who require
water of the highest quality both quickly and easily while
minimizing waste. Advanced Amberpack™ combines the strength of
Rohm and Haas Company’s ion exchange knowledge and experience,
the full capability of Amberjet resins, and Amalgamated Research
Inc.’s innovative patented fractal technology. Add SAMCO’s
design, fabrication and project execution expertise and you get -
High Yield Ion exchange Solutions by SAMCO.
In the world today, time is money – for all of us! However,
for water users, so is water. With Advanced Amberpack™ you save
all three: time, water and money!
Advanced Amberpack™ delivers the quality and strength of ion
exchange in a fully automated, skid-mounted system that is easy
to install and operate. Each Advanced Amberpack™ process train
produces up to 260 gpm of treated water that in many cases does
not require further polishing. If additional flow is required
just add additional trains.
With up to 98% yield (as a
percentage of incoming water as yielded to process), it is the
most water efficient deionization process available today.
Designed to fit on one skid, Advanced
Amberpack™ is compact, yet easily accessible for
maintenance. The entire system typically is only 5’7”
wide, by 7’6” high, by 35’ long, making it the ideal
size to fit inside a standard shipping container. This
design allows you to place Advanced Amberpack™ in small
spaces for existing plants, or reduce building cost for
new projects.
Because of the Advanced Amberpack™
technology a smaller foot print is achieved:
No complex chemical pumping and handling systems
required
Larger flow rate and capacity for the compact
foot print
Large complex neutralization waste treatment
systems are not required
Conventional 2 bed DI systems require larger vessel sizes,
chemical feed system and large neutralization tanks.
Reverse Osmosis systems require pretreatment, large
holding tanks with pumping, post treatment and cleaning
systems.
Advanced Amberpack™ deionization produces high quality water
that in many cases does not require an additional unit operation
for polishing, as with single pass reverse osmosis systems. For
most feed waters, product water conductivity with less than 0.5
uS/cm and silica with less than 30 ppb can be achieved. Various
configurations can provide different levels of quality and
performance.
Advanced Amberpack™ operates at water yields of up to 98%
making it one of the most water efficient ion exchange process
available in today’s market. Amalgamated Research Inc.’s unique
fractal distribution technology delivers near perfect plug flow
in column operations. These fractal distributors, the unique
flathead vessel design of Advanced Amberpack™ and the rinse
recycle step designed in the process, result in extremely
efficient rinses and chemical consumption and a process that
yields up to 98% of the water that is fed into the system. This
yield is far superior to the 75% - 85% for reverse osmosis
systems and conventional ion exchange systems.
By combining fractal technology with the countercurrent
regeneration feature of Advanced Amberpack™ you get efficient
use of regeneration chemicals. By saving on water and chemicals
you minimize waste.
If your business is:
Facing high sewer connection fees
Paying surcharges and or penalties to discharge to the local POTW
A Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facility
Near Perfect Plug Flow!!!
You should consider Advanced Amberpack™ Deionization (ADI)
as part of your treatment solution.
Advanced Amberpack™ is fully automated, providing continuous
flow of up to 260 gpm of deionized water per train, with minimal
operator attention. The control system with plc and manages all
system operations, including the filling of regenerant day
tanks. This system is user-friendly and flexible, enabling quick
and easy alarm and settings changes through a simple touch
screen operator interface. Systems are available with industrial
PC as well.
The Advanced Amberpack™ system comes fully assembled, ready
for placement and hook-up with other plant utilities. These
Advanced Amberpack™ system advantages ultimately save the user
both time and money:
Advanced Amberpack™ retains all of the robust traits of
Amberpack packed-bed ion exchange technology, including the
ability to handle incoming water changes and fast recovery from
process upsets such as pretreatment breakthrough.
Constructed of
high quality materials for optimum durability – rubber-lined
carbon steel vessels with an ASME rating to 100psig.
Standard
piping is PVC or stainless steel. SAMCO’s equipment is built to
last.
Whenever water conservation, high quality and waste minimization
is required, Advanced Amberpack™ is the solution. Advanced
Amberpack™ is an ideal choice over membrane technologies when
scaling or fouling problems exist in the feed water, when
additional polishing of membrane systems is required or when
specific ion removal is desired.

Advanced Amberpack™ Deionization (ADI) is a significantly
improved version of two bed (cation / anion) deionization
already used extensively throughout industry for deionization.
SAMCO’s ADI TechnologyTM offers several advantages over Reverse
Osmosis based systems:
Better product quality. ADI produces water with conductance
of 1 to 0.5 µS/cm, if not better (with total CO2 removal), while
single pass reverse osmosis will only produce 5-10
µS/cm.
More consistent product quality. ADI product quality is not
affected by minor variations in feed water quality. Product
quality from a reverse osmosis system is in direct proportion to
the feed water quality.
Higher feed water recovery. The heart of the ADI is a
patented distribution system that can yield 98%+ recovery of the
feed water. Most reverse osmosis systems cannot exceed 75%
without extensive pretreatment and regular membrane cleaning.
Consistent product flow regardless of temperature. ADI is a
packed bed system that is only flow limited if the pressure drop
becomes excessive (maximum rated flow 270 gpm). Reverse osmosis
systems require regular flow adjustment or sophisticated
controls to maintain product flow rate especially if there are
significant seasonal variations in feed water temperature.
Low power consumption. ADI only requires a small amount of
power for a rinse/recycle pump. Reverse osmosis system require
high horsepower feed pumps, especially if the feed water is
cold.
Fouling tendencies. ADI is much more tolerant to fouling.
Hardness scaling, Silt, Iron and biological fouling are serious
problems for reverse osmosis systems.
Collection and post treatment. RO systems typically require
extensive collection and conveyance systems. Many times, to
achieve the desired quality and flow, additional polishing
technologies are required. For most applications ADI does not
need these post treatment systems.
Your distribution and flow problems have been solved!
Unique fractal distribution technology* delivers near perfect
plug flow in column operations. The combination of this
innovative distribution technology with other unique system
design features has enabled us to introduce a truly
revolutionary concept to deionization.

Fractal Distribution Technology Video
All the small holes have the same
channel distance to the center
Here is why it works better:
This picture illustrates the schematic principle:
The distance from the inlet point to each outlet orifice is
constant.
There is no tendency for the water to prefer the path closer
to the inlet.
Distribution is perfect.
