Activated carbon uses an adsorption process to purify liquids
and gases. In this process molecules of a liquid or gas are
trapped on either an external or internal surface of a solid.
Activated carbon is an ideal material for this process since it
has a very high internal surface area. Liquid purification using
activated carbon can be employed in a wide range of applications
and in different places in an overall system. Activated carbon
is often used to remove organic materials, chlorine and hydrogen
sulfide from water. It can be manufactured from a wide range of
raw materials. Commonly used materials include coal, wood, peat,
coconut shells, and coke.
